Course Description: This course is designed for everyone, those instructors who have never used the Canvas Learning Management System or who are just getting started, and those who have used it recently. By the end of the course, you should have a basic understanding of the Canvas toolset and be ready to begin using Canvas for your classes. This course also integrates the Quality Matters Rubric to train faculty on how to not just build courses in Canvas, but how to build quality courses!

This course is fully online and self-paced, but also instructor-facilitated, so you are never truly on your own. You are also welcome to come to any of the in-person training that is associated with Canvas to supplement this course. All available training will appear in the calendar when known.

There is a Coffee Shop Discussion board where you are encouraged to participate and share your experience as you go through the course. It is not required, but it is a way to build community and share what we are learning here.

Watch for the QM Connection symbol to the right as you are working through this course. It will alert you to information about the Quality Matters Standards that relate to the content on a page or an activity you are engaged in. An understanding of the QM Rubric and how it applies to course design is included in the objectives of this course. For each referenced standard, a link will be provided to the actual standard and its annotations, and you should get in the habit of reading these until you become comfortable with the QM Rubric. So let's start this right here. When a student first accesses an online course, they should clearly see that they are in the right place, what to do next, where to do it, and how to get there. This "welcoming" concept is described in

Information posted at the beginning of the course provides a general course overview, presents the schedule of activities, guides the learner to explore the course site, and indicates what to do first, in addition to listing detailed navigational instructions for the whole course.

Instructors may choose to incorporate some of this information in the course syllabus. In this case, learners should be directed to the syllabus at the beginning of the course. A useful feature is a “Read Me First” or “Start Here” button or icon on the course home page, linking learners to start-up information.

Reviewers, use the first visit to the course to experience what new learners encounter on their first visit to the course. Look for clear directions on what to do first, where to find the syllabus, and how to navigate the course.
