College Policy Information

Academic Misconduct:

Whether or not academic misconduct has occurred and what classroom sanctions, if any, are to be applied are matters to be determined by the respective instructor. A student who opposes the sanction imposed by an instructor may appeal the matter to the appropriate associate dean.

Attendance Policy:

Registration for a class makes the student responsible for attending the class until completed unless officially withdrawn. Students are expected to attend class as scheduled. In an online course, attendance is demonstrated by a student’s participation in an academically-related activity, such as submission of an academic assignment or exam or contributing to an online discussion forum. Excessive absences and/or tardies may interfere with the student’s ability to complete the course successfully.

The manner in which make-up work, tests, or assignments are given for excused absences is determined by the instructor. Possible excused absences include representing the College in officially-approved activities, military service, accidents, court appearances, illness of the student or an immediate family member, or the death of an immediate family member. The student must submit appropriate documentation of extenuating circumstances for an excused absence to the instructor and make arrangements for any make-up work within one week of the last day of the excused absence. It is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements with the instructor to make up missed coursework. Work-related excuses, childcare issues, and/or travel are not considered excused absences. Instructors are not required to provide make-up opportunities for unexcused absences or to give additional time to students who are tardy for tests or quizzes.

Weekly Discussions (___% of course grade)

Sample language

While you may be accustomed to participating in face-to-face classes by attending and speaking up in class, in an online class, your participation will consist of completing weekly activities and posting your thoughts to discussion forums. Reading and responding to others’ responses in writing complete the weekly discussions. As a result of these weekly activities/discussions, you will be reading and writing more in this class than in most courses.

These interactive weekly interactions with your classmates and the instructor will offer a rich opportunity to share impressions of the reading and viewing material. Weekly Assignments (___% of course grade)

Weekly assignments make up 30% of your course grade. These include a variety of activities that are described in detail in the Assignment Details.

Quizzes (___% of course grade)

8 weekly quizzes beginning the first week. The weekly quizzes are worth 10 points each for a total of 80 points

Mid-term and Final Exams (___% of course grade)

Students are required to take a mid-term and a final exam. Each test will include multiple choice and short answer questions. Multiple-choice questions will be primarily from the contents of the readings. Potential short answer questions will come from the questions discussed in the weekly online forums and short lecture videos. The exams will count for 100 points each (20% each), or 200 points (40% total).

Incomplete Grades

Incomplete grades will rarely be allowed for this class. If you think you may not be able to finish the work in the course, it would be best if you dropped the course before the final withdrawal date. A grade of Incomplete (“I”) is assigned only if the final exam or some work of equivalent significance is missed. You must provide me with documentation to support that the absence was due to extenuating circumstances. In the event an Incomplete is given, I will submit to the division chair or other designees a written plan for you to complete the work to establish the
course grade. Unless extenuating circumstances exist, the grade must be established within one semester after the Incomplete was initially assigned. Once the grade is determined I will follow the official change of grade procedure. If no grade has been established prior to the end of the semester, the Incomplete will automatically be changed to an“F”.

Academic Misconduct Policy

This policy applies only to those violations of the Shelton State student conduct regulations relating to academic
dishonesty.

Academic misconduct includes all acts of dishonesty in any academically-related matter and any knowledge of
helping, intentionally-helping, attempt at helping, or conspiracy in helping another student commit an act of
academic dishonesty. Academic misconduct includes, but is not limited to, each of the following acts when
performed in any type of academic or academically-related matter, exercise, or activity.

- Cheating: the use or attempted use of unauthorized materials, information, study aids, answers of
  others, or electronic information.
- Plagiarism: claiming as one’s own work (i.e., ideas, words, data, computer programs, creative
  compositions, artwork, etc.) what was done by someone else, improperly citing referenced works,
  using commercially available scholarly papers, failing to cite sources, or copying another’s ideas.
- Misrepresentation: the falsifying, altering, or misstating the contents of documents or other materials
  related to academic matters, including schedules, prerequisites, transcripts, and medical or military
  excuses.

Advising is the process of preparing for the instruction and training required for the program of study a student wishes to pursue. At Shelton State, students work individually with advisors to plan, select appropriate courses, and learn of college resources that are available to help them achieve degree completion.

Career Services provides guidance to all students and alumni through opportunities to explore and choose career paths and prepare for the workforce through training and well-developed job search skills.

Library Services

The primary purpose of the Shelton State Libraries is to provide information services and bibliographic resources to support the educational needs of students and the instructional needs of faculty, staff, and administrators of Shelton State Community College. The mission of the Shelton State Libraries is to serve as an integral part of the educational program of the College by facilitating and improving learning in all instructional areas, both academic and technical. The library and its staff are dynamic and active forces for progress within the College.

Shelton State C.A.R.E.

The Shelton State Community College C.A.R.E. Program (Communicate, Assess, Refer, and Educate) is committed to helping maintain individual and College community safety and well-being through proactive and collaborative prevention, assessment, and intervention.

The purpose of the Shelton State C.A.R.E. Program is to be part of an early warning and intervention system that allows the College to proactively provide resources to at-risk individuals. Whether submissions are made online or in person, all requests and referrals for assistance are confidential.

Smarthinking is an online tutoring service and is FREE to all currently enrolled Shelton State Community College students.
