HOW-TO: Modules

Context and Preparation:

Modules are where you organize your course objects, and present them to students in a sequential flow. (OC3 is built with Modules!) You might build your Modules chronologically, topically, or in some other framework. A Module can contain Pages, Discussions, Assignments, Quizzes, and other materials. Content can be added to multiple Modules, or iterated several times throughout an individual Module. Modules can be easily organized using the drag-and-drop feature.

But Modules are also functional - not just for visual presentation! Do you want to lock a Module until a certain date, or until successful completion of a prerequisite? Require students to move through a Module in order? Do you want to track student progress? Build your intentions into the structure of your Modules, and let Canvas manage the busywork.

Top-5 Checklist When Creating Modules:

1. Design Your Flow. A Module isn't a laundry list! The progression of items should make sense to a student (not just to you :-) .
2. Avoid Overload. Don't forget, resources (like readings) can be embedded right inside the relevant Assignments - they needn't be listed as separate Module items. A Module with 10+ items can appear pretty daunting.
3. Build for Consistency. Consistency across your Modules can help students with effective time allocation. They needn't be cookie-cutter, but if there's a consistent rhythm from week to week, make sure your Module structure reflects that fact.
4. Build Prerequisites and Requirements. Building your prereqs and requirements, not just stating them, has two major benefits: Canvas can manage them for you, and you can easily track student progress.
5. Include Checkpoints. Preview and Review items can be a useful way to prompt students to reflect, look ahead, give feedback, and generally notice the connections between one Module and the next.
